'Ribbons' public art project proposed for Newtown PikeA major public art project has been proposed to brighten 3 miles of Newtown Pike with more than 250,000 small green and blue utility flags set out in a pattern of long ribbons curling along the road.

The "Ribbons" project would swing back and forth across Newtown Pike, starting at Interstate 75 and terminating on West Main Street.

The art project would be installed a few days before the start of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games on Sept. 25 and be taken down soon after the games end on Oct. 10.

Landscape architect Mark Arnold said the idea grew out of temporary projects by artists Christo and Jeane-Claude, who are known for their large-scale temporary projects like surrounding 11 islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay with 603,850 square meters of floating pink polypropylene fabric. Another time the duo wrapped the Pont-Neuf bridge in Paris with 40,000 square meters of silky, golden fabric. Each of those projects were up for two weeks and then taken down.

The idea to beautify Newtown Pike originated with 5th District Councilwoman Cheryl Feigel, who also chairs the Corridors Committee. One goal of the committee is to beautify major streets leading into the city.
Author's latest book describes the sale of his WarholSome people have asked Richard Polsky whether he should have changed the title of his book I Sold Andy Warhol (Too Soon) .

They have told the author that the parenthetical phrase no longer seems relevant.

"I tell them, that is what the book was about, this particular journey," Polsky says.

The book is about the inflation of the art market in the mid-2000s. Like most financial bubbles of the past decade, it burst in the past couple of years.

Before that, though, Polsky was certain that he had parted with his prized Andy Warhol green "fright wig" painting a year or two too early.
Lesson in nutrition with a taste of operaThe Schmidt Opera Outreach Program is giving Kentucky students food for thought with its new performance, Get Stuffed, beginning Monday at Adkins-Caudill Performing Arts Center in Sandy Hook.

Get Stuffed is the opera program's new show featuring information about nutrition and its effect on student health and learning. And with Kentucky fifth on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's list of obese states, director Marc Schlackman hopes the show will make an impression.

"I think the message of this show is so significant," Schlackman said. "And the way to attack a problem like obesity is to start with children. With adults, our eating habits have developed over years, and they are difficult to change. With children we can, hopefully, make them understand how to eat properly."

Get Stuffed was created by Tapestry, an opera company in Toronto. Schlackman stumbled upon the show on the Internet and thought it would be perfect for Kentucky because of the high obesity rate.

"I am playing a character named Big Cheese and another one that is Broccoli," said singer Chris Baker. "Big Cheese is all about calcium, and Broccoli is part of a trio that represents vitamins A, B and C."
High schoolers help to create the Lexington Youth Arts CouncilLate Monday afternoon, a Papa John's delivery man hustled through the the quiet gallery at ArtsPlace with a stack of pizzas and several bottles of soda.

Wherever teenagers gather, there has to be pizza.

The gallery and LexArts offices usually host events where wine and cheese are more appropriate, but the afternoon's event was a meeting of the Lexington Youth Arts Council.

"I know Lexington has lots of arts opportunities directed to older people," said council president Ashley Gumm, 17, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. "It's great to have this opportunity to come over here after school and do artsy stuff. How many kids get to build a canvas?"

The focus of Monday's meeting was putting together a white 6-foot-by-8-foot canvas that will be the centerpiece of the YAC's participation in LexArts' Arts Showcase Weekend. Visitors to the ArtsPlace Gallery will have a chance to put their marks on the canvas, and LexArts community arts manager Nathan Zamarron suggested that it might become a traveling symbol of the group.
Photo exhibit looks beyond Kentucky's iconic imagesAndrea Fisher has seen the classic Kentucky photographs: images of green hills lined with white fences, where majestic Thoroughbreds roam; mountains in gentle pastels in spring and ablaze with color in the fall.

"Kentucky does have this mystique," Fisher says. "Even though I have lived here 10 years, I still have this romantic idea of what Kentucky is."

As director of the Morlan Gallery at Transylvania University, Fisher wanted to put together a photography exhibition that showed some other sides of the Bluegrass State and looked beyond its iconic images.

MYKY: Life Through the Lens gathers the work of five Kentucky photographers who cast their eyes on a variety of subjects tobacco, mountaintop-removal mining, rural life, women in the Bluegrass's growing Latin-American community.

"I think all of the photographers in this exhibit succeeded in showing something beyond pretty pictures," said Angela Baldridge, a Transylvania graduate and a participant in the show. "Although the prints were often beautiful, the subject matter often contrasted our typical concept of Kentucky beauty and forced us to consider how our decisions and lifestyles define and affect scenic Kentucky."

Brooks adopted the CSA business model for the same reason many small farmers have: It gives him a reliable stream of income so he can focus on his passion.

He earns much of his living as a letterpress printer, book binder and maker of archival storage boxes. Brooks works for many local clients, as well as several New York customers. He also creates art for prints, cards, books and posters.

Brooks said he wants to spend less time printing other people's wedding invitations and business cards and more time creating art with the antique printing equipment that fills the two front rooms of his small home and shop (www.press817.com).
Photographer exhibits portraits of cloistered nunsLili Almog had just finished a major series of photographs.

For Bed Sequence, she had photographed women in their bedrooms. The project was perfectly suited to her interest in intimate portraits of women.

"After the bedroom project, people asked me, 'How can you get much more intimate than that?'" Almog says. "Nuns seemed to be a good answer."

It might have been perfect.

Perfect Intimacy is a series of images shot in three Carmelite monasteries over two years. The photographs are on display at The Art Museum at the University of Kentucky. Almog will speak Friday at the UK Student Center's Worsham Theatre as part of the Robert C. May Photography Endowment Lecture Series.

The Lexington Art League's Nude 2010 tries to explore all of the possible paths.

This is the 24th annual Nude show. It has become not only LAL's main event but one of the pre-eminent visual art events in Lexington. It involves artists from across the country, and the works differ wildly, having only the nude subject in common.

But even the subject is open to interpretation.

"I was looking for an understanding of the figure," said Esther Randall, who with Boris Zakic selected the 85 works for the show from more than 1,100 submissions. "I was also looking for compelling content, something that was not dry or superficial or shallow."

The first post… a test:

This is my first post of the thomaswornall.com art blog. This is a test to make sure that everything is working and the CSS is all functional. This blog will have a heavy focus on modern art verse the old masters. It will be about what happened to art to change it to what it is today, what it is today and where it is going. Most of the artist I critique will come from Cristie’s auctions publications and recommended artists.
